Marheinekeplatz
The area around this square and Bergmannstrasse is characterized by numerous cafés, restaurants and small shops, particularly antique shops. As one of the last market halls in Berlin, Marheinekehalle provides a stylish centre of attraction. During the Second World War, the Wilhelminianstyle buildings (19th century) around Bergmannstrasse suffered only minor damage and remain intact for the most part. Every June since 1994, the west end of Bergmannstrasse hosts the annual street fair, Kreuzberg jazzt!. With more than fifty bands on three music stages, this event constitutes one of the largest jazz events in Berlin.
Architecture

The former post office is, together with the Passionskirche (church), the dominant building at Marheinekeplatz. The architecture is distinctively influenced by the German Werkbund, an association of designers, artists and architects founded in 1907.
With its brilliant white facade, the building is obviously the number one location in this prime area.
The extremely solid building will be renovated to modern standards and equipped with state-of-the-art technology and facilities. On the north side, an extension is being designed in the traditional style of the existing building. Together with the innovative concept of garden design, the result will be a remarkable structure creating unique top-quality office-spaces and retail areas..
Space
The ground floor offers space for two retail outlets, a post office and a café. Two spacious foyers with lifts accessible from Bergmannstrasse and Schleiermacherstrasse provide access to the spacious office units on the upper floors.
On the first floor, four office units with 300 to 450 square metres are being made. Some units have their own separate access to the terraced green area of the courtyard.
On the second floor, up to four traditionally classic, well-lit office units (loft style) with 300 to 450 square metres are being made. These units can be linked together to a size of 1000 square metres.
On the third floor, four office units with ample daylight and a size between 300 and 450 square metres are being made. Some of these premises can be combined to create a space with a total size of 1000 square metres.
Studio On the fourth floor, a spectacular and especially flexible unit is being built.
Its main attraction is the column-free hall. This room has a space of 750 square metres and is 6.30 metres high. In addition, this unit offers direct access to the roof terrace above the extension. The fourth floor also offers an additional very bright office unit with 473 square metres.
On the top floor, another very bright and well-lit office unit with a size of 616 square metres is being developed.
Green Space

The sustainable concept of redevelopment also applies to the sophisticated planning of garden design: A row of sycamore trees and a hedge of hornbeam create a green framework for the entire property. The courtyard, which is enclosed from three sides, will be fitted with steps made of natural stone and various species of tall ornamental grasses and wild plums will be planted.
Thus, the space around the building will create a green oasis in the middle of Kreuzberg not only for people, but also for many kinds of birds and insects. On site, a parking area, holding up to forty-four cars, will be part of the garden design.
